Singapore Makes EV Charging Rules Official

Singapore has made its electric vehicle charging rules legally binding, replacing a voluntary technical document that had governed the sector since 2010. The Land Transport Authority and Enterprise Singapore confirmed in March 2026 that the new standard, SS 722, would take effect from 1 April 2026.

More than an administrative update, the shift carries real force. Technical Reference 25 was advisory; SS 722 is enforceable. Every operator, equipment supplier, and infrastructure developer active in Singapore's charging network must now comply.

Scope has also widened considerably. Wireless charging pads, mobile charging units, and battery swap stations for four-wheeled vehicles, none of which featured in the original document, fall under the new framework. Cybersecurity requirements for charging management systems and updated IEC electromagnetic compatibility guidelines are incorporated as well.

Oversight of the review fell to the Institution of Engineers Singapore, working under the Singapore Standards Council and drawing on a group that included vehicle manufacturers, testing bodies, and professional engineers.

No stage of the charging chain sits outside SS 722's reach. Design, installation, maintenance, and operation are all covered.
For the wider region, timing carries weight. As Southeast Asian markets push to expand EV infrastructure, interoperability and regulatory alignment have become pressing concerns. Singapore's move positions it as an early reference point for neighboring countries still drafting their own frameworks.
